Julie Nelson is the designer behind nelson, the company that launched its Anthropoid collection of sculptural lighting in 1995. With an unconventional approach to ceramics, nelson's early inspiration was Scandinavian organic modernism. Her interest in ceramics, as a material for lighting, is not based on its translucency but on its opacity, the way the light bounces around and fills recesses, accentuating the form. All nelson lights serve a dual function; emitting a warm ambient light in the evening, whilst retaining their aesthetic appeal during the day.
Julie's new outdoor ceramics will be available at Chelsea Flower Show, from May 2005. There are 7 ceramic forms in the outdoor collection: Loop I and II, Oblong, Eclipse, Capsule, Sponge and Cavity. Each design has its own distinctive characteristics and organic form. Hand built in stoneware, they have been designed to be placed over existing garden floor lighting, which fill the sculptures with light.
nelson's work is stocked widely in the U.S.A., including the New York Museum of Modern Art's store, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and the 'W' hotels in Los Angeles and New Orleans. The lamps have also been exhibited in the U.K. at the Cornerhouse in Manchester, the Open Eye in Edinburgh, and London's Royal Festival Hall. The Ellipse light is featured in the International Design Yearbook 2000, volume 15, guest edited by Ingo Maurer. The Sponge light is featured in Contemporary Lighting by Sebastian Conran and Mark Bond, both published by Conran Octopus. nelson lights have been featured in many other publications across the globe, including Japanese and Italian Elle Decor, Wallpaper*, New York Times, Harpers Bazaar, World of Interiors and French Vogue.
